Letters and Papers of Jan Hendrik Oort

This collection represents an extensive curation of the personal and professional correspondence of Jan Hendrik Oort, one of the most influential astronomers of the twentieth century. Compiled by J. K. Katgert-Merkelijn, the volume provides a bridge between Oort's pioneering work in galactic structure and the human side of his academic life. It serves as a vital archival resource that offers insight into the evolution of modern astrophysics through the lens of one of its most pivotal figures.

The book is a part of the Springer series on the history of astronomy, designed to preserve the primary documents that shaped our understanding of the universe. The editorial approach taken by Katgert-Merkelijn centers on contextualizing Oort’s technical discourse within the broader scientific climate of the time. Upon its release, the volume was well received by the scientific community for its meticulous organization and its ability to illuminate the collaborative efforts that drove breakthroughs like the Oort constants and the Oort cloud.
