Ludwig Meidner, Jakob Steinhardt

This 1978 publication by the Kunstverein serves as a scholarly retrospective examining the intertwined trajectories of Ludwig Meidner and Jakob Steinhardt, two seminal figures of the German Expressionist movement. Released during a period of renewed academic interest in the pre-war avant-garde, the book chronicles their shared experiences in Berlin's artistic circles and their eventual divergence as Meidner leaned into apocalyptic visionary painting and Steinhardt became deeply involved with the Die Brücke circle and later, woodcut printmaking.

The volume functions as a formal document of their creative dialogue, highlighting how both artists utilized their medium to process the anxieties of urban life and the shifting political landscape of early 20th-century Germany. The design prioritizes archival fidelity, presenting their work with a focus on historical context and technical evolution. It was received by art historians as an essential reference for understanding the emotional intensity that characterized the Expressionist era, particularly in how both artists employed jagged lines and high-contrast imagery to evoke spiritual and existential turbulence.
