Ludwig Meidner, 1884-1966

This monograph, published by the Kunstverein Wolfsburg in 1985, serves as a comprehensive retrospective documentation of Ludwig Meidner, the influential German Expressionist painter and printmaker. It was produced to accompany exhibitions of his work, which experienced a significant post-war revival in academic and institutional interest. The volume focuses on his apocalyptic landscapes and intense portraiture, capturing the anxiety of the early 20th century, particularly the pre-World War I period, and his later return to Germany after his exile in London.

The publication is curated to contextualize Meidner’s trajectory from the radical Die Pathetiker movement to his role as a chronicler of the Weimar Republic’s intellectual life. The text and plate selections were assembled to honor his expressive, jagged line work and the distinct spiritual urgency that defined his approach to art. It remains a key reference for scholars examining the intersection of modernism and the traumatic history of the mid-20th century, valued for its archival contribution to preserving the legacy of an artist whose career was fractured by his flight from the Nazi regime.
