Where it came from
Published in 2019 by Birkhäuser, a subsidiary of de Gruyter, this monograph serves as an analytical study of the Villa Jeanneret-Perret, commonly known as Maison Blanche. Built by Le Corbusier in 1912 for his parents in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, the house represents a pivotal moment in the architect's transition from local craftsman to a pioneer of modernism, showcasing his early mastery of classical proportion and the influence of his formative travels.
Klaus Spechtenhauser provides a scholarly examination of the residence's architectural significance, exploring how the design reflects the tension between regional Neoclassicism and Le Corbusier's emerging structural theories. The book is part of a series focusing on significant architectural landmarks, aimed at documenting the preservation and historical context of buildings that defined twentieth-century design. It has been well-regarded in academic circles for its detailed floor plans and insightful synthesis of the architect's evolving philosophy.
