Where it came from
Published in 1948 by Harcourt, Brace and Company, this anthology emerged during a post-war era that saw a renewed interest in accessible, high-quality literary collections for the home library. The volume was designed to offer a comprehensive survey of Shakespeare's most influential dramatic works alongside his complete sonnets, serving both academic and general readers who sought a durable, authoritative, and singular source for the Bard’s primary canon.
The edition is characteristic of mid-century American publishing, characterized by sturdy, functional binding and clear typography that prioritized readability over ornate decoration. While Harcourt, Brace was well known for its scholarly contributions, this specific compilation was received as a standard reference text for the mid-twentieth-century household, reflecting the period's commitment to canonizing classical literature within a broad, public-facing format.
