Where it came from
Published in 2017 by Graphic Universe, this graphic novel by Italian author and illustrator Marco Tabilio offers a contemplative retelling of the famous Venetian explorer’s journey to the East. Tabilio sought to strip away the mythic layers surrounding Marco Polo, focusing instead on the psychological complexity of a traveler suspended between two cultures and the act of storytelling itself.
The book is noted for its distinctive visual style, characterized by a clean, minimalist aesthetic and an evocative use of color to distinguish between the protagonist's recollections and the reality of his confinement in a Genoese prison. Critically, the work was received as a sophisticated departure from standard biographical comics, praised for its lyrical approach to historical narrative and its exploration of how memory shapes truth.
