Markus Lüpertz

Published in 2001, this monograph provides a comprehensive examination of the work of Markus Lüpertz, one of Germany's most prominent Neo-Expressionist painters and sculptors. The text, authored by Siegfried Gohr, situates Lüpertz within the post-war German art scene, tracing his stylistic evolution from his early Dithyrambic paintings to his later, more monumental sculptural works. The book serves as a scholarly bridge for international audiences to engage with an artist whose practice is deeply rooted in European classical tradition while simultaneously challenging modernist tropes.

The design of the volume reflects a standard for contemporary art cataloging established at the turn of the millennium, prioritizing high-quality plates that capture the heavy texture and aggressive color palettes characteristic of Lüpertz's canvases. By collaborating with D.A.P. for distribution in the United States, the publishers aimed to increase the accessibility of European critical theory and art historical analysis for North American institutions and private collectors alike. It remains a foundational reference for those studying the resurgence of German figurative painting in the late twentieth century.
