Markus Lüpertz

This monograph serves as an essential record of the work of Markus Lüpertz, the influential German Neo-Expressionist painter and sculptor. Published in conjunction with exhibitions associated with Museum Jorn, the volume encapsulates a period in the early 1980s when Lüpertz was firmly establishing his reputation as a key figure in the resurgence of German figurative painting, a movement often categorized under the umbrella of the Neue Wilde.

The book highlights the artist's idiosyncratic approach, characterized by a raw, gestural application of paint and a recurring fascination with historical and mythological motifs. By focusing on his artistic output during this formative era, the publication provides insight into how Lüpertz challenged the dominance of conceptualism by reintroducing classical subject matter through a discordant, contemporary lens. The design reflects the institutional rigor of European art documentation of the time, prioritizing a direct, scholarly presentation of the works to ground the reader in the artist's heavy, sculptural brushwork and complex iconography.
