Where it came from
Matthew Henry first published his 'Exposition of the Old and New Testaments' in the early 18th century, beginning in 1708. A Nonconformist minister, Henry intended his work to be a devotional tool for laypeople rather than a purely academic text, focusing on the practical application of scripture. The 1975 O. M. Literature edition serves as a modern reprint of this enduring classic, maintaining the structure of his original commentary which emphasizes piety and pastoral wisdom.
The commentary is renowned for its idiosyncratic prose and often pithy, memorable observations that have influenced generations of preachers and students. By the time this specific 1975 edition was released, the text had long been established as a staple of English-speaking theological study. Its design reflects the mid-20th-century approach to religious publishing, prioritizing accessibility and legibility to ensure that Henry's multi-volume work remained a functional reference tool for personal study and sermon preparation.
