Where it came from
Matthew Henry first published his exhaustive six-volume commentary between 1708 and 1710, driven by his desire to make biblical scripture accessible and spiritually practical for the layperson. It emerged from a Nonconformist tradition in England, emphasizing piety and the devotional application of the text rather than purely academic or critical analysis. The work was an immediate success, gaining widespread influence among English-speaking Protestants for its warm, homiletic style and enduring spiritual insight.
The 2009 Hendrickson edition serves as a modern, one-volume consolidation of this classic work. It is designed to provide readers with an affordable, single-bound reference that maintains the integrity of Henry's original seventeenth-century prose while utilizing contemporary printing techniques for readability. This edition continues the legacy of the original publication, remaining a staple in theological libraries and personal collections for those seeking a traditional, verse-by-verse devotional approach to the Bible.
