Matt's old masters

Matt's Old Masters was published in 2003 as part of Matthew Collings's efforts to demystify canonical art history for a contemporary audience. Following the success of his earlier television work and books like Blimey!, Collings maintained his signature colloquial and accessible tone, intending to strip away the academic pretension often associated with the Old Masters. By examining historical figures like Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Caravaggio through a modern lens, he aimed to translate the formal qualities of these works into language that felt immediate rather than distant.

The book is characterized by Collings's intimate, often irreverent narrative voice, which relies heavily on personal observation and a deep familiarity with the mechanics of art criticism. Design-wise, it utilizes the high-contrast, visually saturated aesthetic typical of his collaborations with the publisher Orion during this period. While some traditionalists critiqued his informal approach as overly reductive, the book was generally well-received by a broad readership for making art history feel like a living, breathing conversation rather than a rigid set of historical facts.
