Matthias Weischer

Published in 2004 by Hatje Cantz, this monograph serves as a definitive early survey of the work of German painter Matthias Weischer. Emerging from the New Leipzig School, Weischer gained significant critical attention for his meticulously constructed interior scenes, which blend architectural precision with a fragmented, theatrical sense of space. The book captures a pivotal moment in his career, documenting his transition from a promising graduate of the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig to a central figure in contemporary figurative painting.

The volume features critical essays that contextualize Weischer's practice within the broader resurgence of painting in post-reunification Germany. By exploring the influence of set design and collage on his layered compositions, the book offers insight into how Weischer deconstructs the domestic sphere to explore themes of isolation and artifice. It was received as an essential reference for collectors and curators looking to understand the technical depth and psychological resonance of the Leipzig group's aesthetic at the turn of the millennium.
