Meeresalgen von Helgoland

Meeresalgen von Helgoland was published by the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland to document the diverse marine flora surrounding the North Sea island of Heligoland. Compiled by the botanist Peter Kornmann, the work serves as a foundational reference for researchers studying the specific ecological conditions of the German Bight. It reflects the post-war scientific commitment to cataloging regional biodiversity and providing an accessible guide for both professional phycologists and students of marine biology.

The design of the volume prioritizes clarity and scientific utility, favoring detailed botanical descriptions and technical illustrations over decorative embellishment. Kornmann, who dedicated much of his career to the study of algae at the Heligoland station, aimed to create a pragmatic handbook that could withstand the rigors of field use. The work is regarded as a quintessential example of localized scientific literature from the mid-20th century, praised for its accuracy and its role in establishing the Heligoland facility as a primary hub for algal research.
