Michael Kenna

Published by Prestel in 2009, this retrospective volume serves as a comprehensive survey of Michael Kenna’s atmospheric black-and-white photography. Kenna, a British-born photographer celebrated for his minimalist landscapes and long-exposure techniques, curated this collection to showcase the quiet, meditative quality of his work captured across diverse global locations. The book captures the essence of his signature style, which emphasizes natural light, texture, and the interplay between human structures and the natural environment.

The book’s design reflects Kenna's own aesthetic sensibilities, favoring a clean, understated presentation that allows the stark contrast of his silver gelatin prints to remain the focus. Upon its release, the monograph was well-received by the photographic community for its high-quality reproduction standards and its ability to gather his sprawling body of work into a coherent narrative. It stands as a significant record of his technical mastery in the pre-digital era and his enduring influence on contemporary landscape photography.
