Michael Stipe

Published by Damiani in 2018, this eponymous monograph serves as a comprehensive visual record of Michael Stipe's artistic output beyond his better-known career as the frontman of R.E.M. The collection was curated to document his evolution as a visual artist, bringing together various mediums including photography, sculpture, and video stills that trace his creative journey through the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The work reflects his long-standing interest in the intersection of personal narrative and public iconography.

The book's design focuses on an intimate, archival aesthetic, allowing the imagery to stand without the distraction of heavy editorial commentary. By compiling these pieces, Stipe aimed to shift the focus from his musical persona to his role as a creator of tactile art, emphasizing themes of vulnerability and observation. Upon its release, the volume was received as a significant window into the private artistic life of a musician who has historically maintained a degree of distance from his public image, finding favor among art critics who appreciated the non-linear, impressionistic nature of the selection.
