Murder at Bertram's Bower

Murder at Bertram's Bower was written by Cynthia Peale, a pseudonym for the author Nancy Zaroulis, and first published in 2001. Set in the Gilded Age of 1880s New York, the novel introduces the duo of Nick Travers and Augusta Blair as they investigate a suspicious death within a high-society setting. The work was crafted to evoke the atmosphere of late 19th-century historical mystery, drawing heavily on the period's social rigidities and architectural grandeur to provide a backdrop for the detective narrative.

The book functions as the first entry in a historical mystery series that aimed to combine traditional investigative puzzle-solving with atmospheric period detail. By grounding the narrative in the specific historical context of New York City's elite, Peale sought to capture the interest of readers fond of classic mystery tropes reimagined in a meticulously researched historical environment. It was received as a measured addition to the historical fiction genre, appreciated for its commitment to era-appropriate language and setting.
