Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass : By Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass published the first edition of his autobiography in 1845, a seminal work in the American abolitionist tradition. Written while Douglass was living in Massachusetts, the narrative was crafted to expose the brutal realities of slavery and to dismantle the pervasive proslavery argument that enslaved individuals lacked the intellectual capacity for freedom. Its publication was an act of immense courage that risked his recapture under the Fugitive Slave Law, yet it became an immediate literary and political force.

The 2016 CreateSpace edition is a contemporary trade paperback reprint intended to make this foundational historical text accessible to modern readers and students. The design follows standard modern publishing practices for public domain literature, prioritizing clear typography and a functional layout to preserve the gravity of Douglass's original prose. It reflects the ongoing cultural commitment to keeping primary source accounts of American history in circulation for new generations.
