Nurturing the Prophetic Imagination

Published in 2012 by Wipf and Stock, Nurturing the Prophetic Imagination emerged from a specialized academic context focused on the intersection of theology, sociology, and community development. Jamie Gates, a professor with a background in sociology, authored the work to address how faith-based communities can maintain a critical, transformative vision within modern society. The text is situated within a broader tradition of practical theology that seeks to bridge the gap between abstract religious ideals and the tangible realities of social justice.

The design and content of the book reflect the scholarly mission of Wipf and Stock, an imprint known for distributing theological and academic texts that prioritize substantive inquiry over commercial appeal. Gates utilizes a framework that encourages readers to cultivate a 'prophetic' sensibility—defined not as prediction, but as the ability to perceive and challenge systemic injustices. Upon its release, the book was received primarily within religious studies circles and among practitioners in global development, who valued its attempt to provide a structured, intellectual approach to social activism rooted in Christian doctrine.
