Where it came from
Published in 2009 by Silvana, this monograph serves as a comprehensive introduction to the surreal, narrative-driven photography of Paolo Ventura. Emerging during a period when Ventura was gaining international acclaim for his distinctive style, the book documents his practice of constructing elaborate miniature dioramas to create melancholic, dreamlike tableaus that blur the lines between history, memory, and fiction.
The volume captures the essence of Ventura’s background as a fashion photographer turned fine artist. By meticulously hand-crafting his sets and often featuring himself or family members within these constructed scenes, Ventura explores themes of isolation and the human condition. The book was well-received by the art community for highlighting how his physical craftsmanship creates a unique, haunting aesthetic that feels detached from the digital realities of contemporary photography.
