Papers of John Adams, Volume 11, January - September 1781 (Adams Papers)

The Papers of John Adams is a multi-volume scholarly project initiated by the Massachusetts Historical Society to compile, transcribe, and annotate the extensive personal and political correspondence of the second President of the United States. Volume 11, published by the Belknap Press of Harvard University Press in 2003, covers the critical period of January through September 1781. During these months, Adams was serving as a diplomat in the Netherlands, working tirelessly to secure essential loans and diplomatic recognition for the young American nation amidst the ongoing Revolutionary War.

Edited by C. James Taylor and his team of historians, this volume maintains the rigorous academic standards established by the Adams Papers project, which began in the mid-20th century. The work is designed to provide primary source access to scholars and researchers, offering deep historical context through extensive footnoting. Upon its release, it was lauded by historians for its meticulous editorial precision and for shedding light on Adams's complex intellectual contributions to early American statecraft and his often-difficult navigation of European politics during the final stages of the conflict with Great Britain.
