Where it came from
Published in 1976 by Charles River Books, David Parlett’s Patience Games serves as a foundational guide to the diverse world of solitaire card games. Parlett, a renowned expert in card game history and mechanics, crafted this volume during a period when parlor and card games were experiencing a steady revival in popular literature. His approach was intended to standardize the rules of various traditional games while providing clear, accessible instructions for readers who were previously reliant on incomplete or localized oral traditions.
The design and editorial focus of the book reflect Parlett's scholarly yet practical methodology. He sought to move beyond the simple luck-based reputation of solitaire by highlighting the strategic depth inherent in the games. The collection is highly regarded among enthusiasts for its clarity and accuracy, securing Parlett’s reputation as one of the definitive authorities on the subject and establishing a template for how modern compendiums of traditional games are structured and documented.
