Where it came from
The Penguin Book of Patience was published in 1980 as part of Penguin's long-standing tradition of authoritative paperbacks on games and recreational pastimes. Author David Parlett, a highly respected game designer and historian, compiled this volume to provide a comprehensive, standardized record of solitaire card games, which had historically suffered from inconsistent rule sets and regional variations.
Parlett approached the collection with the intent of elevating card games to a subject of academic and structural interest, meticulously organizing the rules to ensure clarity for players of all skill levels. The book is widely regarded by enthusiasts as a definitive reference work, noted for its precise notation and the inclusion of both traditional classics and more obscure variations, helping to preserve the intellectual history of tabletop solitaire.
