Where it came from
Photography calling! was published in 2011 by Steidl to accompany an exhibition of the same name at the Sprengel Museum in Hannover. Curated by Inka Schube, the project sought to investigate the evolving role of photography in contemporary art, specifically focusing on how artists incorporate archival materials, found images, and historical documents into their practice to challenge traditional notions of authorship and truth.
The book serves as both a catalog and a theoretical exploration of the post-medium condition in photography. Schube brought together a diverse range of international artists to illustrate how the digital age has fundamentally altered the archival impulse. The design reflects the scholarly yet experimental nature of the exhibition, receiving critical recognition for its thoughtful layout and its contribution to the academic discourse surrounding visual culture and archival methodology.
