Phrasikleia

Phrasikleia: An Anthropology of Reading in Ancient Greece, authored by Jesper Svenbro and originally published in French as Phrasikleia: anthropologie de la lecture en Grèce ancienne, emerged from a rigorous tradition of classical scholarship. Svenbro, a Swedish philologist and historian, sought to bridge the gap between historical linguistics and social anthropology to investigate how the act of reading functioned in archaic and classical Greece. The book is heavily influenced by the work of Jean-Pierre Vernant and the broader Paris school of structuralist thought, focusing on the voice and the presence of the reader in antiquity.

The work challenges traditional conceptions of reading by analyzing the relationship between the inscribed text and the speaking subject. By examining epigraphic evidence, Svenbro argues that ancient reading was an act of vocalization that resurrected the voice of the absent author.
