Pierre-Joseph Redouté: le prince des fleurs

Published in 1999 by Renaissance du livre, this volume serves as a comprehensive biographical and artistic study of Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the eighteenth-century botanical illustrator often referred to as the Raphael of flowers. Written by Claudia Salvi, the work emerged during a late-twentieth-century resurgence of interest in classical botanical art, aiming to contextualize Redouté's precise stipple engravings within the scientific and aesthetic milieu of the French court.

The book explores Redouté's technical process, particularly his transition from traditional copperplate engraving to the more nuanced color-printed stipple method that allowed for the delicate gradients found in his famous volumes like 'Les Roses'. Salvi's text is framed not merely as a catalogue of his floral subjects, but as an analysis of the patronage he received from figures like Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais, highlighting how his work bridged the gap between strict scientific documentation and decorative art.
