The 1819 edition of William Shakespeare's plays, published by the Societa tipografica, emerged during a period of intense continental interest in English literature. At the time, Italian publishers sought to broaden the availability of classical and international dramatic works for a growing intellectual class, viewing Shakespeare's canon as essential literary heritage. This specific collection represents the effort to standardize and disseminate the Bard's plays in a format suitable for private libraries and scholars of the early nineteenth century.

The design of this edition reflects the stylistic conventions of Italian printing houses of the era, which prioritized clarity and endurance through traditional typesetting and sturdy, understated binding. While the publishers aimed for accessibility, the project was part of a broader European trend of canonizing Shakespeare, ensuring his works transitioned from the stage to the study. It was well-received by contemporary readers as a functional and reliable text, serving as a staple reference for those engaging with English drama across Italy.
