This collection of plays was published by G. Fock in 1890, representing the late nineteenth-century European interest in accessible scholarly editions of Shakespeare. Based in Leipzig, Gustav Fock was a prominent bookseller and publisher who often curated libraries for academic and international markets. This volume serves as an example of the period's efforts to standardize Shakespeare's canon into portable, consolidated anthologies for both students and literary enthusiasts.

The design of these editions typically reflected the austere, utilitarian aesthetic common to German academic publishing during the late Victorian era. While the text relies on established versions of the First Folio and subsequent quarto tradition, these editions were crafted to provide a clear, readable experience without the heavy marginalia found in larger critical editions. They were well-received as reliable, durable copies that facilitated the broader nineteenth-century cultural canonization of Shakespeare across the continent.
