Prince Igor

Prince Igor is the singular opera composed by Aleksandr Borodin, a work that occupied him for nearly two decades until his death in 1887. The composition emerged from the mid-19th-century Russian Nationalist movement, a period where composers like Borodin sought to codify a uniquely Russian musical identity through the incorporation of Slavic folk motifs and Eastern stylistic influences. Though left incomplete at the time of his passing, the work was famously finished by his contemporaries, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov, who meticulously reconstructed the score from Borodin’s extensive sketches.

The 1889 publication by Boosey and Hawkes serves as an early European documentation of this monumental score.
