Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Puella Magi Madoka Magica originated as a 2011 Japanese anime television series produced by Shaft and Aniplex, created by the collaborative group known as Magica Quartet. The story deconstructs the magical girl genre by introducing darker, psychological themes and existential stakes, contrasting the traditional upbeat tone of the category with a narrative centered on tragedy and the cost of making a wish. This specific volume, published by Yen Press in 2020, serves as an omnibus edition, gathering the original manga adaptation of the series into a single collected work.

The manga adaptation was illustrated by Hanokage, who maintained the distinctive character designs established by Ume Aoki for the anime. The visual approach balances cute, stylized aesthetics with sudden shifts into surreal, nightmarish imagery during the combat sequences against witches. Upon its release, the franchise received significant critical acclaim for its subversion of tropes and its complex screenplay by Gen Urobuchi, ultimately leading to a massive cultural footprint that includes spin-off manga, light novels, and feature-length films.
