Red Balloon (Oversize)

Albert Lamorisse, a French filmmaker and author, created The Red Balloon initially as a short film in 1956, set in the post-war streets of the Ménilmontant neighborhood in Paris. Following the film's critical success, which included winning the Palme d'Or for short films at Cannes, Lamorisse adapted the story into a book that utilized cinematic stills from the film to narrate the whimsical, melancholic tale of a lonely boy and his sentient balloon. This practice of using film frames to create a book was a pioneering approach to children's literature, grounding the narrative in the atmospheric, desaturated reality of 1950s Paris, punctuated only by the vibrant red of the balloon.

The publication of the oversized edition served to showcase Lamorisse’s evocative photography on a scale that preserved the original's visual impact. The design emphasizes the contrast between the drab, grey cobblestones of the city and the singular, radiant object that follows the protagonist, Pascal.
