Reinhold Niebuhr and Paul Ramsey

Published in 2010 by Lexington Books, this scholarly work serves as a critical examination of the intellectual relationship between Reinhold Niebuhr and Paul Ramsey. Kevin Carnahan, a professor specializing in theological ethics, composed this study to map the complex interplay of Christian realism and natural law tradition. The text emerged from a broader academic effort to clarify the foundational influences on American public policy and moral philosophy during the mid-twentieth century.

The design and execution of the volume reflect the rigorous standards of Lexington Books' academic series on religion and political philosophy. Carnahan’s objective was to move beyond surface-level comparisons to provide a systematic analysis of how Niebuhr’s political realism shaped Ramsey’s own contributions to medical ethics and the ethics of war. The book was received by the academic community as a significant resource for students and scholars navigating the nuanced intersections of twentieth-century protestant theology and secular political thought.
