Reinhold Niebuhr on politics

Reinhold Niebuhr on Politics, published by Scribner in 1960, serves as a comprehensive anthology of the influential American theologian's political philosophy. Edited by Harry R. Davis and Robert C. Good, the volume was curated to consolidate Niebuhr's complex musings on power, justice, and human nature into a single accessible reference. It emerged during a period of high Cold War anxiety, when Niebuhr's 'Christian Realism' was a dominant intellectual force influencing policymakers and political theorists alike.

The design and editorial structure were intended to provide a systematic overview of Niebuhr's expansive essays and lecture notes. By organizing the text thematically—covering topics from the nature of the state to international relations—the editors sought to bridge the gap between academic theology and practical political engagement. Upon its release, the collection was well-received by scholars and students of political science, noted for its utility in framing the moral dilemmas inherent in democratic governance.
