Where it came from
Published in 1996 by Editora Index, this monograph serves as a comprehensive study of the life and work of Roberto Burle Marx, the visionary Brazilian landscape architect and polymath. The book was produced shortly after his passing, aiming to preserve the legacy of his modernist approach to landscaping, which famously integrated native flora with abstract, painterly aesthetics to redefine public and private spaces in Brazil.
Laurence Fleming provides a scholarly examination of Burle Marx’s design philosophy, detailing his transition from a traditional gardening perspective to the bold, sculptural use of plants that characterized his most famous commissions, such as the Copacabana promenade. The text is celebrated for capturing how his background as a painter and botanist informed the rhythmic, organic compositions that have since influenced landscape architecture on a global scale.
