Where it came from
Published in 2016 by the Jewish Museum in New York, this monograph accompanied the exhibition 'Roberto Burle Marx: Brazilian Modernist.' The book was produced to provide a comprehensive look at the multifaceted career of Burle Marx, who was a landscape architect, painter, printmaker, and ecologist. It serves as a scholarly record of his influence on modern design, particularly through his ability to integrate native Brazilian flora into geometric, abstract compositions.
Edited by Jens Hoffmann, the volume features essays from a variety of contributors who contextualize Burle Marx’s work within the broader history of 20th-century modernism. The design of the book mirrors the aesthetic principles of its subject, favoring a clean, visual-heavy layout that highlights his colorful botanical sketches and architectural plans. It was well-received upon publication for effectively bridging the gap between his artistic practice and his enduring legacy in urban landscape architecture.
