Where it came from
This volume compiles a series of lectures delivered by the Brazilian landscape architect and polymath Roberto Burle Marx during his 1973 residency at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. The material captures the core of his creative philosophy, articulating his shift away from the traditional, rigid European landscape styles toward a modernist, tropical vernacular that prioritized biodiversity and the architectural potential of native Brazilian flora.
Published by Lars Müller in 2018, the book was meticulously edited by Gareth Doherty to preserve the singular voice of Burle Marx, who was known as much for his painterly eye as for his ecological foresight. The publication serves as an essential archival record of his design process, illustrating how he conceptualized the 'garden as a living work of art' and how his work was initially received as a radical departure from the formalist conventions of the mid-twentieth century.
