Roger A. Deakins

Published in 2021 by Damiani, this monograph serves as a comprehensive visual retrospective of the career of Roger Deakins, one of the most acclaimed cinematographers in film history. The project was conceived to document his decades-long body of work, spanning iconic collaborations with directors such as the Coen brothers, Sam Mendes, and Denis Villeneuve. Deakins selected the images personally, focusing on both behind-the-scenes photographs taken by himself and his wife, James Deakins, and carefully curated stills from his expansive filmography.

The book is notable for its minimalist design and high-quality reproduction, which prioritize the play of light and shadow—the hallmark of Deakins’s craft. By presenting his process through a personal lens rather than a strictly technical one, the publication offers a rare insight into the creative philosophy behind visuals from films like The Shawshank Redemption, Blade Runner 2049, and 1917. Upon its release, the volume was well-received by film scholars and cinephiles as an essential archival record of contemporary cinematic artistry.
