San Vitale di Ravenna

Published in 1955 by Silvana, this volume on San Vitale di Ravenna reflects the mid-century Italian interest in documenting and preserving the country’s Byzantine architectural heritage. Giuseppe Bovini, a scholar deeply immersed in the history of Ravenna, produced this work to provide a comprehensive analysis of the sixth-century basilica, which is globally recognized for its remarkably preserved mosaics. The publication was part of a larger post-war effort to bring scholarly rigor and high-quality photography to the study of Italy's ancient religious landmarks.

The design of the volume adheres to the aesthetic standards of Silvana Editoriale, which became known for its commitment to fine art and archaeological documentation. The layout focuses on balancing scholarly text with detailed plates intended to capture the intricate tesserae of the San Vitale mosaics. Upon its release, the work was well-received within academic and art-historical circles as an essential reference for understanding the transition from Roman to Byzantine decorative styles, serving as a foundational text for subsequent generations of architectural historians.
