Schumann's Music and E. T. A. Hoffmann's Fiction

Published by Cambridge University Press in 2016, this scholarly monograph explores the profound interplay between Robert Schumann’s musical compositions and the literary works of E.T.A. Hoffmann. John MacAuslan investigates how Hoffmann’s distinct brand of German Romanticism, characterized by its fractured narratives and irony, served as a primary aesthetic catalyst for Schumann’s creative output, specifically addressing how the composer translated complex literary devices into musical structures.

MacAuslan, an academic known for his focus on the intersection of musicology and literature, sought to move beyond surface-level biographical connections to examine the technical affinities between the two artists. The work is widely regarded in musicological circles as a rigorous study of how nineteenth-century musical modernism drew inspiration from literary predecessors, providing a dense, research-oriented analysis that appeals primarily to scholars and dedicated students of music history.
