Selected paintings at the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, California

Published in 1980 by Scala/Philip Wilson, this volume was produced to provide a comprehensive look at the collection housed within the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. The museum, formerly known as the Pasadena Art Museum, underwent a significant transformation in the 1970s when industrialist Norton Simon took control of the institution and began consolidating his expansive personal collection of European and Asian art. This catalog serves as a guide to the museum's transition into a world-class facility, capturing the prestige of the collection during that era of reorganization.

The book functions as an art historical survey, selecting key works from the museum's holdings to illustrate its depth, ranging from Renaissance masterpieces to Impressionist canvases. The design follows the conventions of high-quality museum catalogs of the late twentieth century, emphasizing clear color reproductions and concise scholarly entries intended to introduce the collection to a wider audience. It was received as a useful resource for visitors and art scholars alike, documenting the museum's pivot toward an internationally recognized repository of fine art.
