Provenance

Where it came from

Published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1938, this single-volume compilation of Shakespeare’s work reflects the mid-twentieth-century tradition of the 'omnibus' edition. These volumes were designed to provide students and the general reading public with an accessible, consolidated library of the playwright's most essential canon, moving away from the cumbersome multi-volume sets that had characterized earlier Victorian and Edwardian publishing trends.

The 1938 edition features editorial work consistent with the academic standards of the era, focusing on textual clarity for classroom and personal study. While the aesthetic reflects the conservative, sturdy design sensibilities of the Scribner house during the pre-war period, the volume is primarily valued today as a functional artifact of the literary culture that prioritized placing foundational texts into the hands of the growing American middle-class reading market.
