This collection represents a compilation of William Shakespeare's historical plays and poetry, drawing from the literary tradition established at the turn of the 20th century. While specific bibliographic details for an item labeled as a Random House collection from 1900 are historically complex—given that Random House was not founded until 1927—such volumes were typically produced to meet the Victorian and Edwardian era demand for complete, accessible editions of the Bard's work to serve as household staples for the educated public.

The editorial tradition for these volumes often relied on the Globe Edition text, first published in the mid-19th century, which established a standard sequence for the histories and poems. These collections were designed for durability and readability, often featuring minimalist aesthetic treatments intended to fit into the libraries of scholars and enthusiasts. They are noted for their straightforward presentation of the First Folio and quarto texts, reflecting a cultural emphasis on preserving classical English literature in a standardized, scholarly format.
