Short Stories for Students

Short Stories for Students is part of a long-running reference series published by Gale Research, designed specifically to assist students and researchers in literature courses. Launched as a pedagogical tool, the series aims to provide comprehensive analytical summaries of popular short fiction, focusing on themes, character development, and historical context. The 2010 edition, edited by Kathleen Wilson, serves as a bridge between primary literary texts and academic criticism, offering students structured access to complex narrative structures that might otherwise be difficult to parse in a classroom setting.

The design of the series reflects its function as a library resource, characterized by a utilitarian, academic aesthetic meant for quick navigation and ease of study. Rather than serving as a creative work of fiction, the volume functions as a secondary critical source, carefully organized to highlight key literary devices and biographical details about authors. Upon its release, the series became a standard fixture in secondary and post-secondary libraries across North America, valued for its consistency, academic rigor, and ability to distill vast amounts of literary critique into a accessible format for developing scholars.
