Slovo o polku Igoreve

The 1950 edition of 'Slovo o polku Igoreve' (The Tale of Igor's Campaign), edited and annotated by the preeminent philologist Dmitry Likhachev, was published by the USSR Academy of Sciences. Produced during a period of intense scholarly focus on Old Russian literature, this volume served as a critical attempt to standardize and interpret the 12th-century epic poem within the framework of Soviet historical research. The publication reflected the state's interest in bolstering national cultural heritage, presenting a meticulously researched text that aimed to reconcile linguistic complexities for both academic and public audiences.

Likhachev's design and editorial approach were guided by his commitment to rigorous paleographic and historical analysis. By providing extensive commentary and a modernized translation alongside the original Old East Slavic text, he sought to make the challenging manuscript accessible without sacrificing scholarly integrity. The edition was received with high regard in intellectual circles, establishing Likhachev as the primary authority on the subject and serving as a definitive reference for scholars analyzing the themes of unity and struggle embedded in the original epic.
