Swords Against Darkness

Swords Against Darkness, published by Prime Books in 2017, serves as an anthology dedicated to the sword and sorcery subgenre. Edited by Paula Guran, a prominent figure in fantasy and horror editing who has curated numerous influential collections, the volume was designed to highlight the enduring appeal of heroic fantasy. The work reflects a contemporary effort to revisit and revitalize the tropes of classic pulp fiction, gathering both veteran voices and new authors to explore the archetypal themes of steel, magic, and moral ambiguity.

The book is part of a broader trend of retrospective anthologizing that Guran has championed throughout her career. By framing these stories within a modern context, the collection aims to demonstrate the evolution of the genre from its roots in the early twentieth century to current literary standards. It is presented as a balanced survey of the craft, intended to satisfy both long-time enthusiasts of the genre and those seeking an entry point into the distinct, high-stakes narratives characteristic of sword and sorcery fiction.
