The Autobiography of Lincoln Steffens Complete in One Volume

The Autobiography of Lincoln Steffens was originally published in 1931 as a two-volume set, documenting the life of the quintessential muckraking journalist who famously exposed municipal corruption in America. The 1958 edition by Harcourt, edited by his son Peter Steffens, was designed to introduce a new generation to these memoirs by consolidating the work into a single, accessible volume. This edition serves as a significant historical bridge, preserving Steffens's incisive observations on early 20th-century political machines and the shifting landscape of American social reform.

The design of this edition reflects the mid-century editorial approach to legacy literature, prioritizing readability and historical continuity. By bringing the complete text under one cover, Harcourt sought to cement the autobiography's status as a foundational text in American political history and journalism studies. It was received by the academic and literary communities as an essential reference, maintaining the candid, sometimes cynical tone that characterized Steffens’s original reporting during the Progressive Era.
