The Autobiography Of Lincoln Steffens - Vol. II

The Autobiography of Lincoln Steffens, published in two volumes by Harcourt, Brace and Company in the early 1930s, stands as a seminal work of American investigative journalism. Steffens, a leading muckraker known for his work in McClure's Magazine, penned this memoir to reflect on the moral compromises of the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era. Volume II continues his transition from uncovering municipal corruption to exploring the radical political movements of the early 20th century, offering a candid, if sometimes disillusioned, perspective on the systemic nature of power.

The design of the Harcourt editions was characteristic of the understated, dignified aesthetic favored by publishers for serious non-fiction during the Depression era. The layout focused on readability, mirroring the matter-of-fact, incisive prose that defined Steffens' writing style. Upon its release, the work was critically acclaimed as a vital historical document, praised for its intellectual honesty and its detailed portrayal of a changing American social landscape, cementing Steffens' legacy as a chronicler of the American conscience.
