The collected works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge

The Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, published by Princeton University Press, emerged as part of the Bollingen Series, a long-term scholarly endeavor initiated by the Bollingen Foundation. Conceived in the mid-20th century, this ambitious project aimed to provide a definitive, critically annotated edition of Coleridge’s vast and disparate literary output, spanning his poetry, notebooks, lectures, and philosophical essays. It was designed to bring academic rigor to a body of work that had previously been scattered across various fragmentary editions.

The design of the series reflects the high standards of mid-century academic publishing, prioritizing legibility and scholarly apparatus. The volumes were overseen by distinguished editors such as Kathleen Coburn, who dedicated decades to organizing the chaotic archive of Coleridge's papers. Upon its release, the series was received by the literary community as a monumental achievement in textual scholarship, essential for those studying the complexities of Romanticism and the evolution of Coleridge's intellectual life.
