The Diaries of Adam and Eve (Extracts from Adam's Diary / Eve's Diary)

Mark Twain originally wrote Extracts from Adam's Diary as a short story in 1893, later pairing it with Eve's Diary, which was published in 1906. These works were written following the death of Twain's wife, Olivia Langdon Clemens, and are widely regarded as a poignant, fictionalized reflection on his grief and their life together. The narrative humorously yet tenderly explores the complexities of human relationships through the lens of the first couple, blending Twain's signature wit with a softer, more intimate tone.

The 1953 Prometheus Books edition serves as a classic republication of these seminal texts, maintaining the legacy of the original illustrations by Lester Ralph. Ralph's depictions of Eve were notably controversial upon their initial 1906 publication in Harper's Bazaar, as they featured subtle silhouettes that some readers of the era deemed scandalous. Despite these early objections, the pairing has remained a staple of American literature, valued for its balance of lighthearted satire and profound emotional depth regarding partnership and loss.
