Where it came from
The Laurentians, published in 1977, serves as a quintessential example of the regional documentary photography and cultural survey books that gained popularity in Canada during the late 1970s. Released during a period when there was a surge in national interest regarding the preservation and aesthetic appreciation of the Canadian shield landscape, this work by Mela Constantinidi documents the character and architectural heritage of the Laurentian mountains in Quebec.
Constantinidi sought to capture the interplay between the rugged, seasonal natural environment and the human imprint left by settlers and vacationers in the region. The design of the book emphasizes a quiet, observant narrative, prioritizing the visual atmosphere of the villages and woodland vistas over overtly commercial presentation. It remains a localized, well-regarded reference for those interested in the visual history of the region's mid-century aesthetic.
