The letters of Matthew Arnold

This collection represents a significant scholarly undertaking to compile the personal correspondence of Matthew Arnold, the influential Victorian poet and cultural critic. Published by the University Press of Virginia in 2001, this edition serves as a critical resource for understanding the private life and intellectual development of a man whose essays on literature and society shaped 19th-century English thought. The letters offer an intimate view into his relationships with contemporaries and his struggles with the rapid social changes of the era.

The project was driven by the desire to provide a comprehensive, annotated record of Arnold's voice beyond his formal publications. Scholars have long valued these volumes for their meticulous editing, which situates Arnold's internal reflections within the broader historical and political landscape of the Victorian period. By documenting his correspondence, researchers are able to trace the evolution of his ideas, revealing a nuanced persona that often contrasts with his public reputation as a rigid moralist.
